July 10, 2013

As anyone visiting this site has probably figured out, I have not had the time to update the site or continue my translation of Tonan no Tsubasa for quite some time.

Anyone interested in reading a (nearly completed at this point) translation of TnT should go check out Eugene Woodbury's translation. I'm so glad he picked it up!

Tonan no Tsubasa Chapter Three [1] is now up.

I had no idea what was going on at the end so I used some "artistic license."

October 2, 2011

Tonan no Tsubasa Chapter Two [8] is now up.

Next up, chapter 3! Thank you for the kind words of encouragement.

September 27, 2011

Tonan no Tsubasa Chapter Two [7] is now up.

July 12, 2011

Tonan no Tsubasa Chapter Two [6] is now up.

P.S. Thank you to all the lovely people who email me encouragement. I only check my ctokolsky email (obviously not my main account) every once in a blue moon (say, 3 months) but seeing those subtle (and sometimes not so subtle) reminders to update TnT will occasionally give me the kick in the arse necessary to be motivated to translate the next paragraph or 20.

Whoops. Accidentally relinked Chapter 2 [4] instead of Chapter Two [5]. The chapter page should now have the correct content.

March 8, 2011

Tonan no Tsubasa Chapter Two [5] is now up.

February 28, 2011

Naturally, when I said I would update by the end of February, I was clearly referring to February 2011.

Tonan no Tsubasa Chapter Two [4] is now up.

January 25, 2010

The links page is updated to reflect the fruits of o6asan's hard work translating Ono-sensei's short stories.

Chances are I'll get around to translating more Tonan no Tsubasa at the end of February, but I'm secretly hoping someone else will take it up :P

Also, if anyone wants to write up information (e.g. definitions or character bios) and email them to me so I can post them on this site, please do. When I first created this site I had always intended to make it as comprehensive a resource as possible, but have neither the time nor determination to write up everything myself. I won't credit you for your work on the page itself, but I'll keep a running tally on my credits page. (Lastly, I don't expect this but I want to be clear about this from the get go: if you send me something please, please, please, don't copy and paste from anywhere else on the internet. Original writing only.)

Lastly, my apologies to anyone who took the time and consideration to email me but never received a response. I really appreciate that you took the time to send me your comments and I hope that you all still continue to enjoy Ono-sensei's works and have been keeping up with the translations of less flaky translators.

Tonan no Tsubasa Chapter Two [3] is now up.

The Yellow Sea now has an atlas page.

Various small updates to The Bestiary, The Society, The Glossary, and The Atlas.

---

To my amusement, WWWJDIC now has a direct translation for 図南 tonan: "a large undertaking attempted in a far-off land."

The title of Tonan no Tsubasa is synonymous with the phrase 図南鵬翼 tonan houyoku (lit. "draw" + "south" + "phoenix" + "wings"), which refers the instance of a phoenix spreading its wings to soar 90,000 ri to the sea at the southernmost end of the world.

On an closely related note, in Chinese mythology, Zhū Què (known as Suzaku in Japanese) is the guardian bird of the south, and is depicted as a red (due to its association with the element of fire) phoenix.

As far as my interpretation of the title goes, Shushou is the phoenix who is spreading her wings to make the passage through the Yellow Sea in order to ascend Mt. Hou, meet Kyouki, and be chosen as empress of Kyou.

I am fully aware that the common translation of Tonan no Tsubasa is "The Wings of Dreams," but I don't think that dreams is a fitting translation of tonan and early on I decided to use aspiration instead. I liked the word because it retained the "in the process of/potential" quality of the word dream while at the same time retaining a sense of "intent to fulfill/ambition" that dream does not have, and Shushou is nothing if not ambitious.

Plus, you don't need to understand Japanese to enjoy this comic about Gyousou and Taiki.

Minor updates to various pages. Links section cleaned up. Thanks to Bryon for pointing out a few things for The Society section.

Taken shamefully from the Knights' gallery. Awkward translation, yes, I know, but nevertheless enjoy.
